The ancient island of Cyprus is scattered with the ruins of many wonderful and historic temples some of them dating back to the Neolithic period. For centuries it has been the melting pot of civilisations including the Romans, Greek Hellenic and even Egyptian Ptolemaic societies. Of particular importance to the history of Cyprus is the ancient Goddess Aphrodite. Reputedly born from the "Foam" of the sea near the town of Paphos she was the Hellenic (Greek) Goddess of Love and Beauty - and physical lust. The term "aphrodisiac" or "love potion" is derived from her name. The ruined temples featured on this page are all strongly linked to her time as a popular deity.
