PHOTOGRAPHY OF WEST WYCOMBE ESTATE

Once the home of the notorious Sir Francis Dashwood, West Wycombe Estate is both mysterious and beautiful. A Palladian mansion painted in yellow ochre overlooks a garden reputed to represent human sexuality. Artfully placed follies not only decorate the landscape but once provided secluded retreats where, in the 18th century, high born lords and ladies could steal a few hours of privacy together. At the centre of the Estate is a large swan-shaped lake complete with a secret island only reachable by boat. It was in this house and gardens that Benjamin Franklin contemplated how best to achieve American Independence. High on the hill that was once part of the Estate is the Church of St. Lawrence with its peculiar giant golden ball said to seat six people and the gothic flint mausoleum of the Dashwood family.
