Plitvice Lakes and National Park

The Plitvice Lakes National Park located with the western region of Croatia and is a particularly fascinating geological wonder. A World Heritage site, it includes a series of 16 lakes interconnected lakes. Each lake empties into the next lake by means of waterfalls and includes some 92 cascades with a collective vertical drop of 133 m.

The clarity of the water is exceptional and swimming is forbidden to ensure the pristine nature of this unique environment. The Plitvice Lakes National Park can be explored on foot through a series of hikes that vary in length and difficulty. There are also a series of electric boats to help visitors cross the lakes. The best time to visit the lakes is between May and October.

Plitvice Lakes constantly amaze visitors as the colour of the water often changes from lake-to-lake and at different times of the year. This is attributed to a range of minerals and algae although the process is not yet fully understood.

Founded in 1949, The National Park is located in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia near to the borderĀ of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is an important north-south road which passes through the national park area connecting the Adriatic coastal region with the Croatian inland. It encompasses an area of 296.85 square kilometres (73,350 acres).
