MORE RUDE HAND GESTURES

It's so incredible how many times our first rude gestures page has been visited that it is clear that people are really interested in this subject. Naturally, because we, the Aquiziam team, aim to bring to you the material that interests you, we've added this new page of rude gestures. These are gestures that are considered rude (or sometimes very rude) in certain parts of the world. However, in other countries they may mean nothing at all.

We are really interested if a particular rude sign is used in your country - so please e-mail us if you feel that we've missed you out. We are also interested in rude signs that you feel we may have left out of this body language database. You can do this by sending us an image or a description of the gesture together with a its name and a description of its name. If we don't have it already we may feature it on Rude gestures Page Three (With your permission of course). You can do this by e-mailing your suggestion to: content@aquiziam.com

We've also recently been sent a number of gestures that people have seen but don't know what they mean. A couple of them are driving us crazy because we can't discover much about them. We've decided to add a page called "What's This?" and really would appreciate your input. More than 50,000 people have visited the rude gestures page since it was first uploaded and we figure that some of you will be able to help.

You might wonder why we are prepared to focus on this subject as much as we are. The reason is this - some of these signs are incredibly old and are some of the earliest forms of human communication but some of them are quite new and represent the changing culture of the world we live in. This is just as true linguistically. For example the word "fuck" can be traced back 2,000 years to when it wasn't even rude but today if someone said to a woman that they wanted to play with her squirrel it would mean little. By the way, in 1700 to say squirrel or "vair" meant the same in France as "pussy does in the USA today. So when Cinderella lost her glass (verre) slipper she actually lost her "Squirrel" (vair) slipper. Mistranslation again! If you don't understand this then you're probably to young to be on this website. Alexi believes that the Wanker sign goes back at least 2,500 years but the similar "dick head" version is probably less than 150 years old. Anyway - have fun!

You're Stingy: Raise the left arm and tap the elbow with the right hand. In Colombia this means that you are "stingy" or "tight" with your money. This gesture can be used in a casual way between friends but is also a serious insult if it is aimed at someone you don't know or if it is done in an aggressive manner. In general, Colombians value generosity highly. Large families and a culture of "looking after" each other has increased the impact of this insult. If it is done in an environment where alcohol is involved it can easily result in a bar fight - particularly if the person on the receiving end feels that it is unfair

Do you want to have sex? - Rude Gesture

Have Sex With Me: This rude gesture involves tapping the two index fingers together, side-by-side, in a casual manner. It is usually something of a secretive gesture made to suggest that two people have sex. However, it can be used as a very rude gesture if it is done by a third person to indicate that a couple are having illicit sex with each other. It's a bit like - I know what you've been doing. If done in an aggressive manner it suggests that what two people have been doing is wrong or disgusting. Common in Egypt and some other North African countries.

Fuck Knows: This is a gesture that is very definitely more common in Britain. In a sense it is a play on words - fuck nose = fuck knows. It is most commonly seen amongst university students around exam time but is rarely seen in everyday use. To make the gesture the index finger and thumb of one hand form a circle and are then pressed over the person's nose simulating sex. While researching this sign we did come across a reference that it can also be used to indicate that a person is a "brown nose" or in straight forward terms a "serious ass-kisser". In France it may mean "you're drunk".

Dick head - Rude Gesture

Dick head: This expression can (allegedly) be traced to British army slang from approximately 1890 (Etymology Dictionary) and generally means a stupid person. The expression was used to describe a soldier so obsessed with sex that he would sleep with any woman and thus risk exposure to the then incurable syphilis virus - their "dicks" ruled there "heads". The word "Dick" is believed to have originated from the expression "dickey bird" or in other words a bobbing bird peering out of a nest. (A penis in public hair if you don't get it.)

You're So Fucked - Rude Gesture

The Cutis: This rude gesture is common in India and Pakistan. The nail of the thumb is rested behind the front two teeth and then flicked towards the person on the receiving end of the insult. It is usually accompanied by the expression "cutta" which means "screw you." Why this gesture should be rude is a bit of a mystery. Alexi did some research and received several different answers. One claimed that it simulated spitting. (Many Indians believe that phlegm is bad for you and must never be swallowed.) Another source claimed it visually represented the vocal act of swearing.

You're so Fucked: This is a two handed gesture and involves first making a hollow fist from one hand and the slapping the open palm of the other over the hole several times. Not only is this very graphic - it makes a satisfyingly insulting and remarkably accurate sound too. (Especially if done quickly) It is often used in the UK, America and Latin American countries such as Brazil and suggests that a "friend" has been caught out and is now "So Fucked". Amongst friends in can also mean "So what - screw you." Used aggressively it takes on a new meaning which is: "I'm going to fuck you up."

You're an Idiot

You're an Idiot: This gesture is done by first tapping the side of the head with your index finger to indicate an incision and then rotating it. Originally it meant that a person's brains had been stirred or scrambled. This is a reference to an actual technique used on psychiatric patients and is still known as a "frontal lobotamy". It consists of cutting the connections to and from, or simply ruining, the prefrontal cortex. In recent years the surgical lobotomy has been defined as one of the most offensisive and injust forms of psychiatric medicine ever performed by one human on another.

The moutza - Rude Gesture

Little Dick (Prick): This rude gesture is normally used by women and shown to men. The person first makes a loose fist and then extends their little finger and shows it to the person they're insulting. Put literally - "your penis is the size of my little finger." In usage it can actually have several meanings including "you're useless in bed, you're small minded and petty, that was a cheap and stupid thing you just did and you're just pathetic." One final use is when a person has been trying to "big themselves up" or "show off" and have been caught out and then it becomes: "who do think you're fooling".

The little Finger - Rude Gesture

The Moutza: (Eat Shit!) Basically the hand is thrust towards somebody’s face with the palm tilted down and all the fingers outstretched. The action is supposed to simulated thrusting horse dung into a persons face or mouth. It is not the "stop" gesture! Some sources claim that this was an ancient punishment used by the (Byzantines) Greeks on prisoners and other criminals. Another, perhaps more likely origin from the same time period is that if a person had been slandering another person then he or she could expect to turn the corner of a street and suddenly and literally - be made to "Eat shit", a meaning understood for centuries.

In Your Ass - Rude Gesture

In Your Ass / You take it from behind: This is another two handed rude gesture that is demonstrably graphic. It’s a planned insult rather than a reactive one. One hand is formed into an open fist and then the forefinger or middle finger of the other hand is inserted repeatedly into the cavity formed by the first hand. Men, usually drunk, occasionally use it to suggest to a woman that she should have sex with him but this both stupid and fortunately rare. It's usually used as an aggressive rude gesture to suggest that the person on the receiving end is going to have to take it up the ass and probably won't like it.

All images used are of models that have assumed poses for photographic purposes. Thesee images in no way imply any negative characteristic about these individuals.

“No one can be as calculatedly rude as the British, which amazes Americans, who do not understand studied insult and can only offer abuse as a substitute.”
Paul Gallico (1897 –1976) Genius American Author - The Snow Goose
